Liberating the Agrarian Backbone

Agriculture employs nearly a third of Sri Lanka’s workforce, yet farmers endure perpetual cycles of debt, erratic climatic extremes, and volatile spot market pricing manipulated by wholesale cartels. Simultaneously, the excessive use of agrochemicals has degraded delicate catchment soils and triggered chronic health crises across rural provinces.

Nature View Foundation works on the ground to transform farming from a high-risk gamble into a technologically resilient, ecologically regenerative, and financially profitable livelihood.

Strategic Priorities

1. Heritage Seed Banking & Soil Matching

Hybrid seeds imported annually drain foreign reserves and trap smallholders in chemical dependency. NVF partners with indigenous agricultural custodians to establish community seed banks. These traditional strains possess natural pest resistance, deep root systems that survive drought, and superior nutritional profiles with low glycemic indices.

2. Solar Precision Agriculture for Smallholders

Precision agriculture cannot remain the exclusive domain of giant agribusiness corporations. NVF deploys open-source hardware: solar-powered automated drip irrigation controllers and low-cost capacitive soil sensors. Farmers receive localized SMS advisory alerts on optimal irrigation intervals and natural bio-fertilizer application schedules.

3. Bypassing Middlemen via Cooperative Digital Logistics

In traditional wholesale markets, up to 40% of fresh vegetables spoil during transit, and middlemen pocket up to 70% of the retail price while the farmer barely breaks even. NVF’s direct distribution model pools community harvests, utilizes return-leg refrigerated logistics, and connects farmer groups directly to school feeding programs, urban apartment clusters, and exporters.

Targeted Initiatives 4 Programs

Genetic Heritage

Indigenous Soil-Matched Seed Banking

Revitalizing drought-tolerant traditional paddy varieties (Suwandel, Kalu Heenati, Pachchaperumal) and non-hybrid vegetables naturally adapted to Sri Lanka's dry-zone agro-ecological conditions without expensive synthetic inputs.

Smart Agri-Tech

Precision Drip Irrigation & IoT Soil Sensors

Equipping smallholders with micro-irrigation systems and affordable moisture sensors that slash water consumption by 50% while protecting vulnerable aquifers.

Fair Markets

Direct Farmer-to-Consumer Digital Bourse

Connecting farming cooperatives directly to urban consumers, supermarkets, and hospital kitchens through an open mobile marketplace that eliminates predatory intermediary markups.

Food Safety

Zero-Poison Food Certification

Establishing low-cost community testing labs to verify maximum residue limits (MRL), ensuring consumers receive chemical-safe produce while farmers receive guaranteed organic premiums.
