In agrarian heartlands like Buttala and Monaragala, expanding settlements and fragmented forest corridors have forced elephants into contact with paddy farmers.

Strategic Priorities & Interventions

1. Smart Wildlife Corridors & Non-Lethal Bio-Fencing

Traditional electric fences often fail due to maintenance lapses or elephant behavioral adaptation. NVF is pioneering multi-layered bio-hedges planted with dense crops such as Citrus limon (lime) and Palmyra palms—species naturally avoided by elephants—which simultaneously generate secondary cash-crop revenue for farmers. These hedges are reinforced by low-voltage, solar-powered pulsating deterrents fitted with IoT break-detection sensors that instantly notify community rapid-response teams.

2. Decentralized Renewable Microgrids

Energy poverty deepens rural hardship and drives illegal deforestation for fuel. NVF works with village development societies to install distributed solar arrays on school rooftops, community centers, and agrarian pumping stations. These decentralized installations decouple rural communities from erratic national grid disruptions and create local green energy jobs.

3. Civic Watershed Stewardship & Zero-Burn Agriculture

Uncontrolled stubble burning strips organic matter from the soil and contaminates waterways.
